Each year Jo, my wife, and I try to visit the Great Smoky Mountains to photograph the wildlife there. I’ve been capturing wildlife shots there for 4 decades and it’s my favorite place to shoot. Occasionally you luck out and are available when a very good shots just happen. I was off-road, exploring the mountainside in Cades Cove when I saw a momma bear with two cubs scampering down the mountainside. Usually the bears see you first and just keep on moving. This particular bear seemed a little tired of keeping out in front of her cubs so she just plopped down and leaned up against the tree for a quick rest. The cubs wiggled onto her belly and started feeding. It’s always been my discipline to be hidden as best as possible when the bears are around so as not to disturb them or, and this is more important, not to make them angry with me. I was able to tuck below some scrub and not be seen as I clicked my camera in “silent” mode and was able to capture some very nice shots of this event.

Bears are awesome and a lot of fun to photograph.
